After last year’s preseason presentation of the World Series trophy to the Nationals — who never made the playoffs — there is good reason to maintain a healthy degree of skepticism when it comes to precise ranking of the 30 major league teams. The top half-dozen or so teams are elite and have the best chances to win it all . . . usually. The next dozen or so (including the Red Sox) have enough talent but need good fortune and a savvy acquisition or two. The rest of the pack? Don’t bet on them, especially the final six, who are battling for the top draft pick.
