ST PETERSBURG, FLA. -- Boston closer Matt Barnes was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Monday, joining a list of Red Sox who will miss time during a critical stretch of the season.
Barnes is the fourth player in the last week of August added to the list, alongside infielder-outfielder Kike Hernandez, infielder Christian Arroyo and pitcher Martin Perez.
Perez, a left-hander, tested positive for COVID-19 earlier on Monday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before his team's game at Tampa Bay. The Red Sox went through the MLB coronavirus protocols that include contact tracing and testing prior to the series opener, which later led to the Barnes result.
