For the second time in as many completed games, the Red Sox turned an early, low scoring affair in which they had a small lead into a complete disaster thanks to an implosion inning.
Early on, Nick Pivetta was cruising, seemingly taking advantage of the extra day of rest between starts. His velocity was up, the movement on his pitches was generating swings and misses, and he held the Padres scoreless through four innings without much incident.
Then came the fifth inning, in which his fortunes crashed back down to Earth harder than anything since the rock that killed the dinosaurs.
