LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Before the Miami Marlins agreed to a trade involving Marcell Ozuna, an outfielder who hit .312 with 37 homers and 124 RBIs last year, they called the Red Sox.
According to Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, the Red Sox had asked about Ozuna previously and the Marlins called back on Wednesday afternoon as a courtesy.
The Red Sox, though, were never close to a deal, and the Marlins ended up agreeing to send Ozuna to the St. Louis Cardinals for a prospect package highlighted by pitcher Sandy Alcantara, according to multiple reports.
