Red Sox ownership will hopefully get a chance to speak for itself on Friday, when David Price is expected to be introduced as the new staff ace.
In the meantime, a Red Sox source today offered clues to how and why the owners rationalized the massive expenditure of $217 million over seven years for a 30-year-old free agent pitcher like Price.
Because of the emergence of young and cost-controllable talents such as Xander Bogaerts, Moookie Betts, Blake Swihart, Eduardo Rodriguez and Jackie Bradley Jr. last season, the Red Sox felt they could afford the significant and historic financial commitment to Price, who received the biggest-ever contract for a pitcher.
