The era of Rusney Castillo, one of the Red Sox’ most expensive and riskiest splashes in recent history, reached its lowest low yesterday.
The disappointing 28-year-old outfielder was placed on outright waivers Saturday, according to a report from FanRag Sports yesterday. Because the waiver process is shrouded in secrecy, two executives from the Sox said they could not comment on the report. There is every reason to believe the report’s accuracy, just as there is every reason to believe that Castillo has almost fallen completely off the club’s depth chart in the outfield.
Perhaps the clearest sign that Castillo was not part of the team’s plans for this season came Saturday when he was optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket in favor of Ryan LaMarre.
