Boston Red Sox pitching prospect Bryan Mata has quietly climbed the rankings over the last year. Part of that is due to a thinning out of the system, but part of it is that he just keeps performing. He caught the eye of prospect hounds in 2016 when he finished the season with a 2.80 ERA, 2.57 FIP and a 2.42 xFIP. That was over 61 IP with a strikeout per inning. His ERA jumped up to 3.78 in 2017 but his peripherals still looked good. A 3.39 FIP and a 3.58 xFIP suggest there may have been a little positive regression baked into it.
