Ben Cherington was the Red Sox general manager when Dustin Pedroia signed an extension that’ll keep him in Boston through age 37 and David Ortiz signed a deal that could keep him around through age 41.
After hearing of the news that Cherington was stepping down as GM while the Red Sox hired former Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski as president to make all baseball moves going forward, both Ortiz and Pedroia had mixed feelings.
"It's really surprising,” Ortiz said. “Ben has been the GM for a while. It's surprising.”
Asked if he thought the team’s poor performance this season left the players responsible for Cherington’s fate, Ortiz said, “I don’t know.
