NASHVILLE, Tenn. — As most attendees to baseball’s winter meetings raced to the exits of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel yesterday, Pedro Martinez was just settling in.
For the first time since he became a Red Sox special assistant in 2013, Martinez came to the annual meetings, his presence requested by president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski to take part in a wide-ranging organizational discussion about pitching development.
“When I came on board, a lot of people had emphasized our pitching situation in the organization,” Dombrowski said, alluding to the fact that the Sox haven’t developed a long-lasting starter since Clay Buchholz in 2007.
