BRADENTON, Fla. — Kyle Kendrick leads the Red Sox in innings and is tied with Chris Sale for the lead in strikeouts, but his strong Grapefruit League performance was not enough to win him a spot in the rotation.
Kendrick, 32, was always a longshot to break camp with the club. He was reassigned to minor league camp yesterday, officially ending his comeback bid. He will stay with the team this week and start the last Grapefruit League game against the Washington Nationals tomorrow, but will begin the season in the minors.
Drew Pomeranz (stem-cell shot in elbow, triceps tightness) will be ready to start the year in the rotation, manager John Farrell said.
