Red Sox Notebook: David Ortiz 3rd-oldest to hit 30 HR

David Ortiz added another resume booster to his Hall of Fame caliber career yesterday, hitting his 496th career home run and 30th of the season to become just the seventh player in MLB history to hit 30 homers at age 39 or older.

“We’re all engaged every time he comes to the plate,” Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo said afterward. “It’s an exciting time, no matter what we try to say to downplay it.”

Ortiz’ solo shot came in the fourth inning of the Red Sox’ 9-2 win over the Phillies.

He’s now the third-oldest player ever to hit 30 home runs, behind only Darrell Evans and Barry Bonds.
