Based on the Red Sox’ current roster construction, Brock Holt should be the odd man out.
Mitch Moreland and Hanley Ramirez are handling first base, Eduardo Nunez is the backup at every other infield position, and Chris Young is the fourth outfielder. That shouldn’t leave much for Holt to do.
Yet during the Sox’ eight-game winning streak, Holt has started five times. He’s come off the bench in another of those wins. He’s started at two different positions, hit in three different spots in the order, and reached base in a third of his plate appearances.
The depth chart suggests Holt should be the odd man out, but he’s been right in the thick of things.
