At least according to one source, the reason the Sox have stayed on the sidelines while pitchers like Sonny Gray, Aaron Nola, and Kenta Maeda have signed free agent deals elsewhere is that the Red Sox want to add a pitcher via a trade first, before subsequently going the free agency route.
