The Red Sox put Wade Miley in front early and got him into the fifth inning with a one-run lead over the Yankees, the momentum in the home team’s favor on a lively day at Fenway Park.
All Miley had to do was get his team through the sixth, where they could turn to their reliable 1-2-3 punch of Alexi Ogando, Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara for one inning each and get the Red Sox out of the first half with an inspiring win.
But Miley has been getting whacked this year when he gets deeper into games, and this afternoon was no different as the left-hander allowed the Yankees to tie the game in the fifth inning with a balk, before they teed off on him for three more runs on four hits in the sixth.
