FORT MYERS — The Red Sox have added another reliever with strikeout potential to their already potent bullpen.
But he hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2014.
The Sox announced Tuesday they will be adding 33-year-old right-hander Carlos Marmol, the former Cubs closer with a career 3.57 ERA, as a non-roster invite to spring training. Marmol will have a chance to compete for a major league opportunity with the club, though there is stiff competition for the final two bullpen spots.
Craig Kimbrel, Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa, Carson Smith and lefty Robbie Ross Jr. are virtually locks to make the team, assuming they’re healthy come April.
