Rookie Red Sox manager Alex Cora has his veteran bench coach.
Ron Roenicke, the 61-year-old with 27 years of professional coaching experience, was named the Red Sox bench coach on Thursday. The third base coach of the Los Angeles Angels the last two seasons, Roenicke had spent the previous five seasons as the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, where he led the club to a 342-331 record, including a 96-win season in his first year at the helm in 2011. He was fired after the team’s 7-18 start in 2015.
It was widely assumed that Cora, who has just one year of experience in a major league coaching staff after serving as the bench coach for the World Series winning Houston Astros this season, would find an experienced bench coach to help him with the transition.
