It won't be as general manager, but Frank Wren will work for the Red Sox after all.
Wren, a longtime colleague of Dave Dombrowski, has been hired as senior vice president of baseball operations, the Sox announced today. He will serve primarily as a talent evaluator.
Since Dombrowski took over last month as the Sox' president of baseball operations, Wren has been rumored as a GM candidate. But the Sox promoted Mike Hazen yesterday to the position of senior VP/general manager.
Given their similar titles, it's unclear where Wren will rank in relation to Hazen on the organizational flow chart, though it seems they will operate in separate realms and report directly to Dombrowski.
