Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland left Thursday’s game with the Cleveland Indians in the bottom of the first inning after suffering a left knee contusion.
The injury occurred in the top of the inning when Moreland tried to catch a foul ball. As Moreland gave chase, he went into a slide as he approached the photographers’ well next to the Red Sox’ dugout. He was unable to make the catch, but his momentum carried him to the edge of the well, where it appeared his leg made contact with a bolt sticking up from the ground.
Moreland got up gingerly and finished the inning defensively, then left the game after reaching safely in the bottom of the inning.
