Stephen King is known as the master of horror stories yet not even his brilliant mind could have crafted the nightmare that this season has become for the Boston Red Sox.
The Red Sox enter the day with a dismal 12-17 record and one of the worst run differentials in the majors. They are far closer to being in the company of the rebuilding Baltimore Orioles and Miami Marlins than they are to the mix of contenders.
