Red Sox designate LHP Tommy Layne, UTIL Michael Martinez

SEATTLE -- After posting a 3.30 ERA in three seasons with the Red Sox, Tommy Layne has been designated for assignment.

The left-handed Layne was no longer needed after the Sox acquired lefty Fernando Abad from the Minnesota Twins before the 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline on Monday.

Layne had a 3.77 ERA this season while holding lefties to a .259 average and .688 OPS.

Utility man Michael Martinez was also designated for assignment to make room for outfield prospect Andrew Benintendi, who will be called up on Tuesday.
