Red Sox break down, fall to Tigers after bullpen falters

DETROIT – For most of the afternoon, the Red Sox’ depleted lineup seemed to be their insurmountable defect.

Turned out, their depleted bullpen was a far greater problem.

An improbable Red Sox rally was reduced to rubble when three different relievers failed to get the final out of the eighth inning. The Tigers came back to beat the Red Sox 6-5 in their series opener at Comerica Park.

“It’s not one of those games where you’re going to look back on it,” losing pitcher Joe Kelly said.

Might not want to look back on it, but might have to if the bullpen continues to struggle without some of its key pieces.
