BOSTON -- Near the end of spring training, Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said he wouldn't rule out carrying three catchers at some point this season.
Apparently, though, three was a crowd.
When the Red Sox activated catcher Christian Vazquez from the disabled list Friday, they could have simply given him the roster spot vacated late Wednesday night when seldom-used outfielder Rusney Castillo was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. Instead, the Sox sent catcher Blake Swihart to Pawtucket and called up reserve infielder Marco Hernandez in addition to Vazquez, a move to continue the reshaping of the bench.
