“Momentum is the next day’s starting pitcher” is one of baseball’s more annoying cliches for two reasons. First, it’s essentially a way of saying “calm the fuck down,” and no one wants to calm down. Calming down is for toddlers; I’m not a toddler, so I’d like to enjoy the previous day’s ninth inning comeback for as long as I want, thank you very much. And secondly, the maxim is annoying because it’s extremely true, and no one likes a know-it-all.
The Red Sox starting pitcher today was Josh Winckowski, the man who entered the season seventh on the depth chart (or eighth, if you want to count Lucas Giolio).
