FORT MYERS -- Home plate collisions aren’t supposed to happen in spring training.
But when Chicago Cubs catcher Victor Caratini made an arrant throw that sailed over the head of pitcher Yu Darvish, Rafael Devers took off from third base. He slid head-first into home but the throw back to Caratini took the catcher toward Devers and the two smashed into each other.
Devers had fallen forward to slide when his right shoulder and head hit Caratini in his chest.
Devers stayed down and shook his head as if he was seeing stars, then slowly made his way up and walked off the field.
