BOSTON -- As the Red Sox activated second baseman Dustin Pedroia from the disabled list for Friday night's game against the Tigers, prospect Sam Travis was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket following a solid first stint in the Major Leagues.
In another roster move, the Red Sox recalled left-hander Brian Johnson for his scheduled start on Friday and optioned right-hander Brandon Workman to Pawtucket.
In six games, Travis slashed .471/.526/.588 with two doubles.
While Travis was on the roster, he was starting at first base against lefties. For a 23-year-old who projects as a key player in the future, that isn't an ideal role for more than a short stint.
