The Boston Red Sox optioned Rusney Castillo to Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday night, hoping to restore some market value for the Cuban outfielder who is signed to a $72.5 million deal.
Castillo has been reduced to a very expensive fifth outfielder and had just four at-bats for the big league club before the demotion. At Pawtucket, “(Castillo) will get enough at-bats to either play his way back into the Red Sox's outfield picture or raise his profile as a potential trade chip,” writes ESPN’s Scott Lauber.
The Red Sox have until Friday to make a corresponding roster move.
