Veteran lefty Rich Hill spent part of the season playing independent ball. He will end it in the big leagues.
Hill, a Milton native, will join the Red Sox on Tuesday, according to interim manager Torey Lovullo, after going 3-2 with a 2.78 ERA and a 29-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio in five starts for Triple-A Pawtucket. Hill began the season in the Washington Nationals' system but was released in June, at which point he made two starts for the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League.
It's possible the Red Sox could use Hill as part of an expanded six-man starting rotation.
