PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello says Pawtucket Red Sox co-owner Larry Lucchino has reiterated his interest in building a stadium in Providence after the unexpected death this week of principal owner James Skeffington.
Mattiello tells the Providence Journal he met Tuesday with Lucchino. Mattiello said the state now needs to make a counter proposal to the team, saying the team's first offer wasn't the best deal for taxpayers.
Joseph Azrack, chairman of the state agency responsible for land where the team wants to build a stadium, also was meeting Tuesday with Lucchino. A spokeswoman for the I-195 Redevelopment Commission said it was to be discussion on how to proceed.
