Mastrodonato: Red Sox have few candidates to fill David Ortiz’ leadership role

A new year, a new team.

And while former Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington’s fingerprints remain, it’s getting more and more difficult to see resemblances of the last great Red Sox team: the 2013 World Series champions.

The only three players left? Dustin Pedroia, who led the 2013 team with 6.3 WAR, according to Baseball-Reference, Xander Bogaerts, who, legally, had to keep his distance from the champagne baths during the AL East title celebration that September (he didn’t turn 21 until October), and Brandon Workman, who earned manager John Farrell’s trust that postseason but has barely pitched for the Red Sox since.
