Despite reports that Lucas Giolito suffered a partially torn UCL that will likely require surgery, the Red Sox are holding out for a second opinion on their pitcher’s health.
Giolito is set to travel to Birmingham, Ala. Monday to meet with Dr. Jeffery Dugas, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports injuries. Manager Alex Cora offered a status update on Giolito a day after chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said the injury could sideline him for the season.
Speaking to the media Wednesday afternoon at Fenway South, Cora said the team won’t make a decision about Giolito until next week.
