Kimbrel to have knee surgery, out 3-6 weeks

Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel will undergo surgery on Monday to repair torn cartilage in his left knee and is expected to miss three to six weeks, the team announced on Saturday.

Kimbrel was diagnosed with a left knee medial meniscus tear, and Boston placed the right-hander on the 15-day disabled list Saturday before its game against the Rays at Fenway Park. This is the first time the 28-year-old, who has 17 saves and a 3.55 ERA this season and was named to the American League All-Star team, has gone on the DL in his career.
