John Henry says Red Sox to ‘lead the effort’ to rename Yawkey Way, ‘haunted’ by former owner’s racist past

Red Sox owner John Henry wants to change the name of Yawkey Way.

The street right outside Fenway Park, named for the longtime owner of the team, Tom Yawkey, is a controversial subject because Yawkey’s racist past. Henry, in an email to the Boston Herald, said that he is in favor of changing the name and is “haunted” by the racist connotations.

Henry noted that he has raised this issue before:

I discussed this a number of times with the previous mayoral administration and they did not want to open what they saw as a can of worms.
