MINNEAPOLIS — At least the Red Sox are showing some fight.
They could have faded away quietly last night, as they had for most of the game, the first of three against the Minnesota Twins. But they put two runners on in the ninth and pinch-hitter Chris Young came through with a two-run, game-tying single, supplying some energy for a possible uplifting victory.
Joe Mauer spoiled that.
Mauer got the best of Matt Barnes in the bottom of the ninth, belting an outside fastball over the fence in left-center as the Twins walked off on the Red Sox, 4-3, at Target Field.
