Joe Kelly’s down and out

Joe Kelly threw his between-starts bullpen session before yesterday’s game at Fenway Park.

It might be the last he sees of the old ballpark for a while.

The Red Sox didn’t merely remove Kelly from their starting rotation yesterday, they optioned him to Triple-A Pawtucket where he will join demoted first baseman/outfielder Allen Craig, with whom he was acquired last July in the ill-fated trade that sent starter John Lackey to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Kelly, who infamously predicted before spring training that he would win the Cy Young Award, departs with a 5.67 ERA that ranks 98th out of 102 pitchers with enough innings to qualify for the ERA title in either league.
