FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Joe Kelly has been spending so much time caring for his newborn son in a sleep-deprived fog that he hasn't really focused on fending off Henry Owens for the final spot in the Boston Red Sox pitching rotation, but he has to now.
Kelly reported to camp Tuesday -- six days after the birth of Knox Joseph Kelly -- and now the work begins.
Manager John Farrell said earlier in the week that Kelly has the lead in the battle for the fifth spot in a rotation that includes David Price, Clay Buchholz, Rick Porcello and Eduardo Rodriguez, but "we can't ever take for granted that injury, performance, might cause us to make decisions.
