Is Joe Kelly the Sox closer? Not Right Now

A Nick Cafardo column last Wednesday was headlined “(Kelly) is the obvious choice to replace Uehara ( as Red Sox closer”)

Friday night the team banded together for a 15-1 blowout of Seattle. They had just received the terrible news about John Farrell’s lymphoma. And Kelly proved them wrong.

Kelly pitched six innings, allowing 4 hits and a run, walking 2 and fanning 6 with a variety of pitches His only lapse was a Kyle Sager homer in the first. It was his second consecutive strong outing as a starter. For now, that’s what he is.

Kelly is now 5-6 with a 5.
