How Red Sox plan to fill in for reliever Carson Smith

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- More than ever, Carson Smith would like to follow in Andrew Miller's footsteps.

It isn't so much that Miller parlayed a successful run as a setup man for the Boston Red Sox into a lucrative free-agent contract, although that certainly would represent Smith's ideal career trajectory. It's more that Miller missed only one month for the New York Yankees last season after being diagnosed with a strained flexor mass muscle, the same injury that will put Smith on the disabled list when the Red Sox open the season April 4 in Cleveland.
