For a potential upgrade at second base, the Red Sox were willing to part with a pair of hard-throwing Triple-A relievers in the righthanded Ty Buttrey and the left-handed Williams Jerez when the club traded for Ian Kinsler on Monday night.
The 25-year old Buttrey (1-1), a fourth-round pick in 2012 draft, is currently on the disabled list with knee inflammation, but having an improved 2018 season as he owns a 2.25 earned run average and 64 strikeouts against 14 walks in 44 innings. Buttrey is known for his fastball, 94-97 miles per hour and a solid change up, but he’s struggled maintaining a consistent velocity.
