Ben Cherington’s hair was unusually flat, he was sporting the looks of a 48-hour mustache and his heavy eyes were fixed on the ground as he met with reporters shortly after the MLB non-waiver trade deadline on Friday afternoon.
It looked like it had been a long week for the Red Sox’ general manager.
"We had a busy few days,” he said. “We worked on a lot of stuff. We talked about a lot of stuff -- big, small and in-between. In the end, we didn't find enough compelling to do much. It didn't come our way.
