Steven Wright will not be starting the All-Star Game for the American League Tuesday night, but maybe that’s not such a bad turn of events for the Red Sox knuckleballer. It’s not as if Red Sox hurlers have been shut out from the honor through the years. Seven Sox stars have started the Midsummer Classic, but with the notable exceptions of Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez, each of whom won their starts and were named MVP of the game, Red Sox pitchers have not fared particularly well when starting the showcase game, going 2-3 with a 7.31 ERA.
