It is with a smile that Red Sox fans should wave goodbye to Doug Fister, a starter the club just doesn’t need, nor can it afford.
Saying goodbye to Fister, who reportedly signed with the Texas Rangers on a one-year major deal worth $4 million yesterday, should not have been a difficult decision.
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told the Herald the Red Sox did not attempt to re-sign Fister. The Sox didn’t have a rotation spot to promise him.
It is not the 2018 version of Fister that the Red Sox should be looking for, but the 2017 version, the one who, back in spring training, couldn’t be sure that his career wasn’t over.
