FORT MYERS — If the Red Sox want to keep veteran outfielder David Murphy, they have until tomorrow to let him know.
Murphy, a left-handed hitter who batted .283 with a .739 OPS last year, yesterday said that he opted out of his minor league contract. The Red Sox have until tomorrow to add him to the roster or release him.
“I’m holding out hope I end up here,” Murphy said after going 0-for-1 as a replacement left fielder in the Sox’ 5-1 spring win over the Philadelphia Phillies. “But all the same I’d like a big league job somewhere.
