Dayton Moore was never close to becoming Red Sox GM

TORONTO -- The man who put together these Kansas City Royals teams that have increased their win total in a remarkable six straight seasons and are on the verge of playing in back-to-back World Series was once being lured to become the architect of the Red Sox instead.

Dayton Moore, the Royals’ GM since 2006, was courted by the Red Sox in 2005, during Theo Epstein’s brief hiatus.

Larry Lucchino, then the president of the Red Sox, and chairman Tom Werner had hoped to meet with Moore, a man who had built a glimmering reputation as a brilliant scouting mind in the Atlanta Braves organization, to interview him for the GM position.
