Daniel Nava designated as Red Sox desperate for fresh pitchers

For three years Daniel Nava wasn’t just a happy-to-be-here major leaguer. He was an above-average hitter for the Red Sox who spent 2013 as a top-20 outfielder against right-handed pitching.

He helped the Sox win a World Series and finally earned his first pay day, collecting $1.85 million this year in his first year of arbitration.

But Nava’s time with the Red Sox may have come to an end on Thursday, when it was announced that the Sox designated the 32-year-old for assignment. Another player who had to pay the price for the Red Sox’ disastrous year from the pitcher’s mound, Nava was pushed off the roster for another reliever, right-hander Jonathan Aro.
