Finding someone to play left field with any regularity has been something the Red Sox have struggled to do for much of the season. Brock Holt, Blake Swihart, Chris Young and Andrew Benintendi have all had a chance out there, and each one has been derailed by injury.
Young’s return to the lineup Aug. 22, nearly two months after injuring his right hamstring while rounding first base, happened just days before Benintendi suffered knee and ankle injuries.
In 15 games since coming off the disabled list, Young was batting .333 and had an OPS of 1.151 with five doubles, three home runs and seven RBI entering last night’s game at Fenway Park against the Baltimore Orioles, the type of production the organization envisioned when they signed him to a two-year contract during the offseason.
