PHILADELPHIA -- The Red Sox are hoping for some good news regarding Carson Smith this weekend.
After throwing a mound session early Thursday at Citizens Bank Park, Smith was sent back to Boston to be examined by the team doctors.
Manager John Farrell said he was hopeful Smith, who had Tommy John surgery last May, would be able to begin a rehab assignment in Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday.
Smith's latest throwing session wasn’t overly encouraging.
“It was OK,” Farrell said. “I would say OK. The stuff was OK, maybe the consistency wasn’t quite there. But honestly, I think that’s to be fully expected.
