Bullpen lets Red Sox down in ugly 6-4 loss to Royals

KANSAS CITY — Thirty times this season, the Red Sox carried a lead into the eighth inning. Twenty-nine times, they held on to win.

This afternoon was the exception.

Before they recorded a single out in the eighth, two of the Red Sox most trusted relievers walked the bases loaded and surrendered the first grand slam of Salvador Perez’ career.

Pitchers in the Royals bullpen lifted their arms in celebration. There was little the Red Sox could do but hang their heads. The stunning turn of events left them with a 6-4 loss in their series finale at Kauffman Stadium, turning a strong road trip into a break-even disappointment.
