Buckley: Rick Porcello fires up hope

Rick Porcello’s otherwise splendid performance in the Red Sox’ 4-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays last night at Fenway Park was a far cry from Roger Clemens’ 20-strikeout game against the Seattle Mariners exactly 29 years earlier on the same mound.

But given the state of Red Sox pitching these days, it was just as much of a surprise as what the Rocket did on that cold, misty April night in 1986.

Let’s not mince any words here. The Red Sox starting pitching stinks. We could be kind and add that the team’s starting pitching stinks “right now,” but it’s been so bad that we’ll dispense with the niceties and the buffers.
