While pitching-needy contenders from New York to Los Angeles and both Texas teams jockeyed yesterday to submit their best offers for David Price and Cole Hamels in the precious hours before tomorrow’s non-waiver trade deadline, the Red Sox put two other lefties in their crosshairs.
Brian Johnson and Henry Owens.
“Our goal and our intent is to see Brian Johnson and probably Henry Owens at some point,” manager John Farrell volunteered without being asked specifically about either of the touted pitching prospects. “All that is on the horizon.”
Why not? The Sox aren’t getting Hamels, the erstwhile Phillies ace who was on the verge last night of being traded to Texas, and they have no use now for Price, a two-month rental headed for a huge free agent payday.
