BOSTON -- Even now, 13 years later, Alex Rodriguez can't help but think about what might have been.
It was December 2003, and after what Rodriguez recalled Tuesday as "long negotiations at both my house and [Boston Red Sox owner] John Henry's house," he was on the verge of being traded to the Red Sox by the Texas Rangers. But the players' union killed the deal over a $28 million salary deferment.
"We had this deal worked out," A-Rod said before the opener of a three-game series at Fenway Park, his last road trip before he plays his final game for the New York Yankees on Friday night.
